Ten young achievers embrace a bright future at West Kalimantan universities

Pontianak, 26 November 2020 – Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, through its operating entities PT Kartika Prima Cipta, PT Paramita Internusa Pratama and PT Persada Graha Mandiri, recently awarded scholarships to ten outstanding outstanding students from Kapuas Hulu to further their university studies. The scholarship awarding ceremony was held at the company’s representative office in Pontianak, where each student received an educational assistance fund of IDR 64 million to pursue a higher education at universities for four years.

Besides the scholarships, Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food provided the students with training materials on capacity building. “We realise the importance of soft skills in building younger generation’s character so they have good personality and become more mature individuals. Such skills may also help them prepare for the world of work upon completion of their study,” said Susanto Yang, the CEO of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food West Kalimantan Plantations. The funding can help cover not only the students’ tuition fees, but also their living expenses.

The ceremony of giving scholarship for Kapuas Hulu outstanding students to continue study in college, Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Pontianak representative office. The students also learn about the benefits of sustainable palm oil and capacity building..

“I feel blessed and grateful to be receiving the scholarship from Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food. I also learned a lot of positive things from the capacity building activities, including broadening my horizon by meeting new friends from different regions. I will make the most of this golden opportunity by studying harder so I can put my knowledge to good use for the people,” Sarah Pratiwi, a scholarship recipient, commented.

The capacity building training, as a part of the programme running since 2017, adopted a fun-learning method while observing strict COVID-19 health protocols. Learning activities included lectures, presentations, discussions, case studies and problem-solving activities accompanied with quizzes and games. Additionally, the students received training for raising awareness and gaining deeper understanding of the benefits of sustainable palm oil. Tzu Chi Sinar Mas also took part in providing the students with information regarding humanitarian activities in order to prepare them to be agents of change for the community in the future.

“To me, receiving this scholarship means pride, responsibility and trust. I have the responsibility for finishing my study on time with good grades, and the trust placed in me keeps me motivated to do my best to achieve good academic results, and stay away from laziness and other distractions. I want to make my people proud as well as develop a mindset of continuous improvement as a youth ,” remarked Leo Armando expressing his gratefulness.

Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food believes that every child has the right to pursue proper education in order to make their dreams come true.

The company fully supports the youths, especially those living in rural areas, with strong motivation to study and succeed, but with limited economic resources.
