Until today, SMART has operated in Indonesia for more than 40 years. Supported by hundreds thousands of Indonesian people, SMART has tried to improve the lives of millions of Indonesian citizens directly and indirectly through its products and services.
Throughout its journey, the Company has experienced many difficult moments in Indonesia. Our deep affection to this country made the Company decides to never leave its business, employees, and also its loyal customers. This affection also motivates the Company to help and share the blessing from God to the millions of our poor brothers and sisters in the country.
Together with its employees, the Company devotes its love to our poor brothers and sisters through the support from Indonesia Tzu Chi Foundation. The foundation involves in humanity activities with universal value to all ethnics, races, and religions in spreading its love. Since 1998, the Company has invited all employees to be Tzu Chi volunteers and distributes rice directly to many places. Since 2003, the distribution has spread from Jakarta and Greater Jakarta to Sumatera, Java, Makassar and Nusa Tenggara Timur. More than one thousand employees actively involved in this rice distribution.
When a tremendous disaster hit Aceh in December 2004, SMART employees voluntarily donated cash. The donation was also collected by SMART employees every weekend in shopping centers during January and February 2005. Tens of employees also flew to Aceh, Nias and Simeulue to directly give the donation and built houses for the victims.
Sinar Mas Peduli was declared on 25 May 2004 in the Plantation Conference in Bali. On the declaration, all of the conference participants signed the commitment to assist and care about the poor people in Indonesia.
Sinar Mas Peduli invites all employees to care, participate and to be the executors in humanity activities. Up to 2006, almost 90% of all SMART’s employees has participated and given their monthly donation for humanity activities.
Additionally, Sinar Mas Peduli has given health assistance to poor people who need medical aids. The aids has been given to the harelip, physical defect, hydrocephalus, hernia, cataract victims, and also held the Health Social Services. The social services were supported by Tzu Chi International Medical Association. From December 2004 to January 2006, about 700 patients in Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan were healed.
Sinar Mas Peduli has also given assistance in preparing supporting infrastructures for schools near our operational areas. The education programs held are Management Based School Training, elementary teachers training in the plantations, School Scientific Week, cleaning, painting and planting 38 elementary schools, and also books donation.
The programs held by Sinar Mas Peduli are not only to give charity, but actually to share love to human race. The purpose is to open the hearts of wealthy as well as poor people and made them understand that inside true love there is thankfulness and inside the thankfulness there are respect, understanding, and empathy. At last, both the donators as well as the receivers will always remember these values and extend them to other humankind.
